“What are the most important skills professionals need today?" This is one of the most prevalent questions that we hear as business schools leaders, both from the industry as well as from the students. At ASB, we believe that in order to become a transformative and principled market ready leader, our students need to balance both Smart and Sharp skills, a concept developed by Prof. Loredana Padurean, Associate Dean and Faculty Director for Action Learning at ASB.
At ASB, smart skills are those that require our students to respond to situations and challenges with intelligence and diplomacy. They include, among others, creative and critical thinking, emotional maturity and empathy, cognitive readiness, social intelligence, adaptability, ethical and cultural awareness, self-awareness, personal discipline, a global mindset, collaboration and teamwork (from brainstorming to execution), knowing when to listen, validation, humility, entrepreneurial mindset, followership, humility, flexibility, willingness to learn, innovation, open mindedness, creativity, dependability, managing up, down and across, networking, etc.
The “sharp” skills comprise technical capabilities such as data analytics, optimization, risk assessment, system dynamics, and machine learning, for example. And my goal as an academic leader to teach these skills, along with my colleagues, in practice as well as in theory.
In this interactive session, Prof. Loredana will share the top 10 smart skills that she believes ASB students have to develop (along with their sharp skills) at ASB and how we will go about developing them.
