Exclusive Hybrid Masterclass: Food Supply Chain Orchestration for Circularity (SCO-C)

Globally, about one-third of the food produced, weighing 1.05 billion tons or 132kg per capita annually, is wasted. Yet, an estimated 29.6% of humanity was moderately or severely food insecure (2022). Additionally, about 8-10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are attributable to growing food that is later wasted, not counting the resources—land, water, fertilizers, etc.—used. This market failure to connect surplus supply with demand for food can be overcome with the innovative business model of Supply Chain Orchestration (SCO). 

In this masterclass, Prof. Phadnis will present how organizations can create value using SCO by more effectively matching local needs at a given time through an agile supply network with stable nodes. He will then explain how SCO can be used to reduce food waste while simultaneously addressing hunger to create a circular supply chain, as SCO-C. The talk is based on Prof. Phadnis’s seminal publications on SCO and SCO-C, published in the prestigious Academy of Management Perspectives and California Management Review, respectively. It illustrates SCO-C using the example of The Lost Food Project (Malaysia’s largest eco food bank), where he is the President Emeritus of its board of directors.
